Product photos can make or break a sale. High-quality photos that show a product from every angle will give your customers a preview of what they’re buying so they feel confident that they are spending their money to get exactly what they’re looking for. The quality of your product photography and the perceived value of your product (and your brand, by extension) go hand in hand.

Luckily, you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on a professional photoshoot to get great product photos! You can easily take your own photos right at home – even with your smartphone.

Here’s what you need to take great product photos at home:

  • A camera (DSLR is preferred, but a smartphone will do)
  • A tripod (with smartphone attachment if needed)
  • A ring light
  • Foam poster board
  • Tape
  • A table
  • A photo editing app

Once you have all your materials, it’s time to start creating your very own at-home photography studio!

Lighting

Lighting is the most important element in photography. The right lighting can really highlight your product, while poor lighting can make it look completely different than it does in person. Ring lights are excellent at shining the right amount and tone of light that you need. Make sure you get on that is on a tripod, so the light stays steady while you photograph.

Background

Most product photos are taken against a white backdrop. You can easily create one yourself by taping two large squares of foam poster board together, placing the bottom square on a table, and leaning the other flat against a wall.

Angles

Attach your camera or smartphone to a tripod so you can get clear, steady photos. Play around with camera angles, tripod height, and the position of your product. Don’t limit yourself to only a few shots from a few different angles and positions. It’s better to have too many options than not enough!

Modeling

Using models in your product photography is a great way to show your product in action, but you have to be sure that your photos look professional and not like you are just snapping a picture of your friend holding your product. This can be accomplished by using a clean background, proper lighting, a quality camera, styling your model appropriately, and retouching the photos with a photo editing app.
